When we created the Yogaline mat, our biggest priority was to make a high-quality yoga mat that was environmentally friendly using a manufacturing process that does no harm to the environment. Along with bespoke alignment guides and customised design, this feature is at the heart of our Yogaline project.

PVC

Most mass-produced yoga mats today are manufactured using PVC – Polyvinyl Chloride – a synthetic plastic made from petroleum that is most commonly used in plumbing and construction. PVC is a popular choice because it is cheap, grippy and durable. Similar materials used are TPE and EVA.

Sadly PVC is one of the most toxic consumer materials on the market. Most PVC products that reach the end of their lifespan will end up being burned or in landfill sites, where they can take upwards of 1,000 years to biodegrade whilst releasing highly-toxic Dioxin chemicals and Chlorine into the ground.

In recent years more companies have experimented by making yoga mats using natural materials, such as Cork, Cotton and Jute. These mats are way less polluting than their PVC alternatives and much more friendly to the environment. The problem with each of these alternatives is that none of them can match up to the grip strength and durability of the PVC mats.

Eco Polyurethane

Over the past decade Polyurethane (or PU) has become the material of choice for all premium eco yoga mats. PU is a polymer created from organic elements and is fully biodegradable in landfill conditions[1]. Unlike PVC, PU biodegrades in less than 5 years and the only bi-products it releases are non-toxic elements  such as H2O.

We are proud to report that Yogaline mat is made out of 100% Natural Rubber with a biodegradable PU top-surface. The Natural Rubber provides cushioning whilst the PU surface provides incredible grip strength, wet or dry, and no guilty conscience about the environment.

Cushioning

When practicing yoga, whatever your level it’s important to find the sweet spot between supportive cushioning and stability. A mat that is too spongy won’t give you the foundations needed to confidently perform balance oriented poses such as Tree, Warrior III, Dancer etc. Too thin and there won’t be enough padding to safely support the joints. You have to kiss a lot of “frogs” before you find your perfectly balanced mat. We spent 15 months evaluating materials to find the perfect level of cushioning and could not be happier with the results!

Sustainability

As we all know, our earth only has a finite amount of resources and the effects of unsustainable human consumption are beginning to show. I cannot begin to tell you about the millions of items of plastic, PVC and other discarded synthetics that I have personally witnessed floating around in the ocean. It is a heartbreaking sight when turtles, fish and other sealife are washed ashore in a tangled heap of plastic bags and nylon nets.

As consumers, each and every one of us can help to make a difference by voting with our feet and choosing to purchase goods and services that are environmentally responsible, sustainable and produced by accountable companies. This is what we strive for at Yogaline & if you have any questions about our product we would love for you to get in touch.
